About the Author
The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories: China From the Bottom Up由蘭登書店出版,令廖亦武在西方一夜成名。 (Liao is not only a fine writer but a courageous and brave and individual willing to stand up at every turn for his right to speak and think freely.)。」

Liao Yiwu (born August 1958 in Yanting, Sichuan, China) is a Chinese writer, poet, musician, and dissident widely recognized as one of the foremost chroniclers of contemporary China’s marginalized voices and political trauma. Internationally, he is regarded as a pioneering figure in Chinese prison literature.
Liao became one of the major literary witnesses of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. In the early hours of June 4, 1989, he collaborated with Canadian sinologist Michael Martin Day to create and distribute an audio recording titled Massacre, which circulated across more than twenty Chinese cities. He also organized the filming of the poetry documentary Requiem. As a result, he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison, where he endured severe torture and reportedly attempted suicide twice.
After his release, Liao dedicated himself to documenting the lives of ordinary and marginalized people in China through underground literature and oral history. His acclaimed works include The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories, China from the Bottom Up, God Is Red, Bullets and Opium, and For a Song and a Hundred Songs. Though banned in China, his writings gained international recognition for their powerful portrayals of dissidents, prisoners, underground Christians, and members of the social underclass.
In 2008, the English edition of The Corpse Walker was published by Random House, bringing Liao widespread international acclaim. Literary agent Peter Bernstein described him as:
“A courageous and brave individual willing to stand up at every turn for his right to speak and think freely.”
Despite his growing reputation abroad, Liao remained under intense surveillance in China for many years. His home was repeatedly searched, manuscripts confiscated, and he was prevented from traveling overseas numerous times. In 2011, with assistance connected to German diplomatic efforts, he escaped China through Vietnam and eventually settled in Berlin.
His major works include Massacre, The Second Massacre, the prison poetry collection Gulag Love Songs, the music album River or Time, and documentary works such as June Fourth: My Testimony, God Is Red, and Bullets and Opium. His writings have been translated into nearly thirty languages, and he has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
