When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish―into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Editorial Reviews

A lyrical, emotionally rich romantasy that blends war, magic, and love.

Divine Rivals stands out for its unique combination of historical war setting and subtle fantasy elements. The world feels familiar—reminiscent of early 20th-century wartime—yet is elevated by magical realism and mythological undertones. The fantasy aspect builds gradually, allowing readers to stay grounded in the characters’ emotional journeys.

The heart of the novel lies in the relationship between Iris and Roman. What begins as a classic rivals-to-lovers tropeevolves naturally through their anonymous letter exchanges. Their connection feels intimate, vulnerable, and believable, making the romance one of the book’s strongest elements.

The writing is poetic and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on themes like:

  • grief and loss
  • love and devotion
  • identity and resilience

The novel also captures the emotional weight of war effectively, balancing moments of quiet tenderness with tension and uncertainty.

That said, the pacing can feel slow in the first half, and the mythology behind the gods remains somewhat underdeveloped until later in the story. The ending, while impactful, is a cliffhanger, which may frustrate some readers.
