A New York Times bestseller!

“Kate DiCamillo's dazzling first title in the Norendy Tales trilogy is brimming with wit, whimsy, and heart as it follows five puppets fulfilling their thrilling shared destiny.” – Shelf Awareness

Shut up in a trunk by a taciturn old sea captain with a secret, five friends—a king, a wolf, a girl, a boy, and an owl—bicker, boast, and comfort one another in the dark. Individually, they dream of song and light, freedom and flight, purpose and glory, but they all agree they are part of a larger story, bound each to each by chance, bonded by the heart’s mysteries. When at last their shared fate arrives, landing them on a mantel in a blue room in the home of two little girls, the truth is more astonishing than any of them could have imagined. A beloved author of modern classics draws on her most moving themes with humor, heart, and wisdom in the first of the Norendy Tales, a projected trio of novellas linked by place and mood, each illustrated in black and white by a different virtuoso illustrator. A magical and beautifully packaged gift volume designed to be read aloud and shared, The Puppets of Spelhorst is a tale that soothes and strengthens us on our journey, leading us through whatever dark forest we find ourselves in.

Editorial Reviews

Five puppets pass through the lives of one sad adult after another, hoping to find their story. Their journey is illustrated in entrancing, haunted black-and-white art by Julie Morstad. Finally, the puppets are given to a child who writes a play for them to star in — a play that ties the tales of all the forlorn adults back together in a tour de force that a lesser author would be afraid even to attempt. . . Both ‘Despereaux’ and ‘Spelhorst’ demand a lot of their readers. . . Children need stories that help them explore . . . darkness.”—The New York Times Book Review A quintet of puppets—“the king and the wolf and the girl/ and the boy and the owl”—ponder their dreams and yearnings in this quietly entrancing novella told in three acts. . . . Newbery Medalist DiCamillo applies spare prose and witty conversation in fleshing out the puppets’ desires as well as exploring the power of stories to promote community and offer a path to fulfillment.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Like many other stories featuring toys, from Hitty to The Mouse and His Child, there is a strain of melancholy here, with characters who long for autonomy but whose existence is dependent on the imaginations of others. This mood is perfectly captured in digitally rendered pencil drawings that add specificity (a Regency-esque setting in fictional Norendy), dignity, drama, and sheer beauty.—The Horn Book (starred review

What treasure box does DiCamillo have in store for young readers this time? One that contains five beautifully crafted puppets. . .

DiCamillo’s storytelling is as effortless as always, and Morstad’s frequent pencil illustrations elevate it further. This first of the Norendy Tales chapter-book series is guaranteed to enchant young readers. This collaboration by two masters of their craft—a Newbery Medalist and a Governor General’s Literary Award finalist—will prove irresistible.—Booklist (starred review)

The illustrations bring the puppets to life and add to the magic and whimsy of the tale. With themes of love and loss, this chapter book reminds us there is light to be found in every darkness. . . An enchanting and original fairy tale that will delight both young and old.—School Library Journal (starred review)

A new book from Kate DiCamillo always gives reason to celebrate, and her latest fairy tale is no exception. . . . The Puppets of Spelhorst’s short chapters of simple yet often profound prose beg to be read aloud. This exciting, fast-paced story contains several pointed touches of female empowerment as well as a glorious surprise ending that is revealed in a full-page spread. Julie Morstad’s illustrations do an excellent job of setting an old-fashioned, fairy-tale mood while achieving a delicate feat: making these puppets look both inanimate yet lively. . . With all the makings of a classic fairy tale, The Puppets of Spelhorst skillfully addresses many of DiCamillo’s favorite themes: the power of love and togetherness; the many unexpected wonders of the world; the importance of following one’s dreams; and the majesty of stories and storytelling.—BookPage (starred review)

The first of an anticipated trilogy of novellas, this is a quiet story of belonging, family, and destiny. The illustrations do remarkable work in reflecting the blank eyes and fixed features of the puppets while also evoking a strong emotional response to them through subtle choices in their posture, shading, and relative size on the page.—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

DiCamillo has a knack for capturing the real sentiments of children (and puppets), foibles and all, in fantastical settings and circumstances. . . . As in all DiCamillo's stories, the pages are peppered with smart, wry humor, balanced with moving moments of flawed humanity. An absolute gem. . . . Kate DiCamillo's dazzling first title in the Norendy Tales trilogy is brimming with wit, whimsy, and heart as it follows five puppets fulfilling their thrilling shared destiny.—Shelf Awareness

Puppets yearn for greater things. . . . A quiet, comforting fable of identity and belonging.—Kirkus ReviewsMs. DiCamillo is always a careful writer, deploying words with dignity, economy and affection. . . readers ages 7-10 are likely to want to know what happens next.—The Wall Street Journal

Lyrically written and enchantingly illustrated, it's an instant classic created by two masters in their craft.—The San Francisco ChronicleAn unforgettable fairy tale about five puppets seeking to pursue their dreams. With enchanting illustrations from Julie Morstad, The Puppets of Spelhorst is a magical story perfect for family read-alouds.—The Barnes & Noble Reads Blog

Wow. DiCamillo’s The Puppets of Spelhorst is a master class in storytelling. As soon as I finished the book, I turned back to page one and started reading it again. Five stars.—Colby Sharp, educator and coauthor of The Commonsense Guide to Your Classroom Library

There’s so much more to talk about with this book. The role of the girls who play with the puppets and how their very different impressions of them cause great changes. The role of the maid Jane Twiddum and what she wants. Heck, there’s a whole undercurrent of feminism and the roles puppets and living women play within society, but I suppose I’ll save that for someone else’s thesis. The important thing to understand is that this is a story where it doesn’t matter how physically passive you are. Your interior life, your hopes and dreams and goals, that’s the thing that matters. That’s what’s going to make you into an active protagonist in the end, regardless of whether or not you have the ability to move. The Puppets of Spelhorst taught me that. Now imagine what it could teach your own children.—Betsy Bird, A Fuse #8 Production, School Library Journal

About the Author

Kate DiCamillo is the author of THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX, which received the Newbery Medal; BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, which received a Newbery Honor; and THE TIGER RISING, which was named a National Book Award Finalist. She says, "Mercy Watson had been in my head for a long time, but I couldn't figure out how to tell her story. One day, my friend Alison was going on and on and on about the many virtues of toast. As I listened to her, I could see Mercy nodding in emphatic agreement. Sometimes you don't truly understand a character until you know what she loves above all else."

"Our best choices often come when we have no choice." - Twice, Mitch Albom I’m halfway through Twice, and I absolutely love how Mitch Albom leads readers to imagine the question “what if” — twice — as if life offered a second chance. Every time Alfie tries to redo something to make it better, he ends up harming something else he didn’t notice before. What I admire most is how Mitch Albom brings back timeless values and common sense through the story. His writing reminds readers of the manners and moral grounding people are supposed to have, contrasting with today’s impulsiveness and carelessness. I find this novel especially meaningful for young people who are just beginning to explore love and relationships. Many tend to judge a partner by appearance or physical attraction, but Albom’s portrayal of Alfie shows how true love is rooted in sincerity, respect, and saving the best of oneself for the person you truly care about. I highly recommend this novel to both young readers and adults. It encourages us to pause and reflect on the choices we’ve made in life — and to appreciate the values that truly matter.

Here is why this book touches me Reading about 黃仁勳’s journey—from a Taiwan-born immigrant to leading one of the most influential tech companies in the world—struck a deep chord. What moved me most was how his success, as reported, wasn’t just built on ambition, but on vulnerability and resilience. Despite achieving enormous heights with Nvidia, Huang continues to be driven by fear of failure and a restless urge to never rest. That resonates because it reminds me that greatness isn’t solely about confidence or triumph—it’s about navigating uncertainty and pressing on when things are hardest. In a world where we often celebrate only the end result, seeing someone embrace doubt and still push forward felt both inspiring and deeply human. So when I recommend this book, it’s not just for the tech or business insight—but for the reminder that our own doubts or quiet struggles don’t disqualify us; they might just be part of what drives us toward something greater.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is a harrowing account of one of World War II’s least-remembered tragedies—the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Through the perspectives of Emilia, Florian, Joana, and Alfred, Sepetys gives a human face to the massive refugee crisis in East Prussia as the Soviet army advanced. As a lover of military history, I was struck by how vividly she portrays not just the battlefield, but the desperation of civilians caught in its path. The alternating viewpoints reminded me of the layered storytelling in Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, while the emotional gravity echoed Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. Sepetys’ attention to detail is meticulous, and her inclusion of historical notes grounds the novel in reality while making the narrative even more haunting. The looming fate of the Wilhelm Gustloff carries the same tragic inevitability I felt reading Herman Wouk’s The Winds of War—you know what history dictates, yet you cling to hope for the characters. What makes this book stand out is Sepetys’ ability to balance military and political history with deeply personal stories, reminding readers that war is measured not only in battles and borders but in individual lives. For those who enjoy historical fiction grounded in real wartime events, Salt to the Sea is a must-read. It belongs on the shelf alongside novels like All the Light We Cannot See and Between Shades of Gray for its ability to illuminate overlooked corners of history with humanity and grace.

When I first picked up We Were Liars, I had no idea what I was getting into. The blurb and description intrigued me, but I couldn’t have imagined how deeply this book would affect me. By the end, I was in tears—so much so that days later, I still felt the weight of its story. The book begins innocently enough, following a group of friends, but quickly transforms into one of the most intense and shocking novels I’ve ever read. E. Lockhart’s prose is deceptively simple yet incredibly powerful, lingering in your mind long after you finish. We Were Liars is haunting, addictive, and impossible to put down—you won’t stop at just one chapter. The ending is devastating, unforgettable, and completely unanticipated. It shattered me in ways only a few books ever have. This is more than just a YA thriller; it’s a beautifully crafted, emotionally overwhelming novel that absolutely deserves the acclaim it’s received. We Were Liars is the kind of book that stays with you long after the last page. A true must-read.

When I first met Zezé, the five-year-old at the heart of My Sweet Orange Tree, I was swept into his world—a world that is both harsh and full of wonder. Zezé lives in a poor neighborhood in Brazil, and his life is anything but easy. He’s clever, mischievous, and always getting into trouble, but it’s clear he’s just searching for love and understanding. As I read, I couldn’t help but feel for Zezé every time he faced punishment or felt misunderstood by the adults around him. Yet, what touched me most was his incredible imagination. Whenever Zezé felt lonely, he would talk to his best friend—a little orange tree in his yard. Through his conversations with the tree, I saw how he found comfort and hope, even when things were tough. The story became even more moving when Zezé met Portuga, a kind man who treated him with the care and respect he so desperately needed. Their friendship warmed my heart and reminded me how powerful kindness can be. What really stood out to me was the writing style. José Mauro de Vasconcelos writes with a simplicity and honesty that makes Zezé’s voice feel real and immediate. The language is easy to follow, yet it carries deep emotion. Through Zezé’s eyes, even ordinary moments become vivid and meaningful. The author’s style draws you in gently, making you feel every joy, sorrow, and dream right alongside Zezé. Reading My Sweet Orange Tree was an emotional journey. I laughed at Zezé’s playful antics, felt my heart ache during his struggles, and finished the book with a sense of hope. This story reminded me that even in the hardest times, imagination and friendship can help us survive. I believe anyone who picks up this book will be touched by Zezé’s story, just as I was.

Adam LeBor’s The Last Days of Budapest is a highly readable, well-researched account of wartime Budapest, praised for its engaging and accessible style. LeBor skillfully blends personal stories with historical analysis, making the book clear and compelling even for readers without a deep background in World War II or Hungarian history. Adam LeBor’s The Last Days of Budapest The Destruction of Europe’s Most Cosmopolitan Capital in World War II is a compelling and meticulously researched account of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second World War. LeBor, an acclaimed journalist and historian, offers readers a deeply immersive narrative that captures the complexity and tragedy of Budapest’s siege during the war’s final months. Drawing on newly discovered diaries, archival material, and firsthand interviews, LeBor reconstructs the city’s transformation from a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital into a battleground marked by devastation, deprivation, and profound human suffering. His ability to weave together the experiences of diplomats, soldiers, civilians, and members of Budapest’s Jewish community provides a multi-layered perspective that is both historically rigorous and emotionally resonant. What distinguishes this work is LeBor’s skill in balancing the broader geopolitical context with intimate portraits of individuals navigating extraordinary circumstances. The book not only documents the destruction of a great European city but also highlights the resilience and courage of its inhabitants amid unimaginable adversity. The Last Days of Budapest is essential reading for anyone interested in World War II, European history, or urban studies. Adam LeBor’s authoritative and engaging narrative ensures that this overlooked chapter of history receives the attention it deserves. I highly recommend this book to scholars, students, and general readers alike who seek a nuanced and powerful exploration of Budapest’s darkest days.

This book offers a deep dive into the art of picture book illustration through interviews with 21 influential illustrators. Leonard Marcus explores their childhoods, inspirations, creative choices, and the lasting impact of their work on children's literature. The reviewer, a librarian who admits to being a "dodo bird" when it comes to artwork, finds the book enlightening, providing a greater appreciation for illustration techniques and storytelling. Each interview reveals unique artistic influences, from Vera Williams’ Bauhaus-inspired use of color and light to Maurice Sendak’s bold departure from the sentimental Victorian past. Mo Willems, inspired by Where the Wild Things Are, highlights the importance of humor and failure in storytelling. The book compares illustrators to different flavors of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, capturing their distinct styles and personalities. Marcus’ well-researched interviews feature engaging, unexpected answers and strong chapter-ending quotes. The book also sparks ideas for school and online educators, offering creative ways to engage students with literature. Educators, whether in classrooms or virtual spaces, can draw inspiration from activities like Lois Ehlert’s milk carton aquariums and Tana Hoban’s photography project, which helped children see their surroundings in a new way. While not for casual readers, this book is essential for librarians, teachers, and online literature educators, transforming "dodo brains" into an "electrically charged force field" of inspiration.
